As a Laboratory Assistant, you will perform routine laboratory functions that support the diagnostic process and uphold the highest standards of accuracy and safety. Responsibilities:

Receive and sort specimens, ensuring accurate labeling and proper storage.

Perform routine instrument maintenance and troubleshooting to keep laboratory equipment functioning optimally.

Prepare specimens by centrifuging, aliquoting, inspecting for clots or fibrin, and inoculating as needed.

Build worklists, prepare slides, and assist in specimen processing for various tests.

Prepare and label reagents or media, maintain supply inventories, and set up testing stations.

Record data such as temperature charts and maintain detailed logs for regulatory compliance.

Conduct quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures, including resolving pending test lists and locating missing samples.

Decontaminate work areas and perform weekly biohazard and radioactive wipe tests in accordance with safety protocols.

Change gas cylinders and dispose of biohazard waste following safety guidelines.

Use laboratory computer systems and standard PCs to document and manage laboratory data.

Maintain accurate records and files, ensuring compliance with all safety and regulatory standards.

Follow all PPE and safety procedures, including decontamination, waste disposal, and handling of hazardous and radioactive materials.

Complete required training and competency assessments to ensure ongoing proficiency.

Required Skills:

High school diploma or equivalent; background in medical assistant training is beneficial.

Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity for specimen processing and equipment maintenance.

Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities efficiently.

Good communication skills with coworkers and external providers, demonstrating courtesy and professionalism.

Basic computer proficiency, including familiarity with laboratory information systems and Microsoft Windows.

Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, PPE requirements, and biohazard handling.

Capable of following detailed instructions and maintaining accurate documentation.

Nice to Have Skills:

Experience with laboratory refrigeration, centrifuges, and microscopes.

Familiarity with QA/QC procedures and laboratory accreditation standards.

Prior exposure to laboratory workflows involving radioactive materials or bloodborne pathogen protocols.

Preferred Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required; completion of medical assisting or related health science courses is advantageous.

Other Requirements:

Availability to work Monday through Friday with rotating weekends and holidays.

Submission of relevant immunizations including flu shots (August-April), TDaP, Varicella, MMR, and TB testing.

Ability to handle physical tasks such as standing for extended periods, bending, and lifting moderate weights.

Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment and retain information once learned.
